Apex Legends season 2 has just gone live, and with it, an opportunity to buy and play a new character, Wattson, and to purchase the season 2 battle pass which looks to be an improvement over its predecessor.
There are far fewer “wasted” slots this time around, and though we still aren’t exactly at the level of Fortnite when it comes to what is offered for completion, this is a step up from last season, that much is clear.
I’ve just gone through the battle pass, and between the paid and free versions, you will amass the following if you make it all the way to the end:
- 24 Weapon Skins (Two Legendary – Spitfire, R-301)
- 5 Legends Skins (Two Legendary – Octane, Caustic)
- 10 XP Boosters
- 6 Music Packs
- 12 Loot Boxes (1 Epic, 1 Legendary)
- 11 Stat Trackers
- 1200 Crafting Materials
- 1000 Coins
- 6 Frames
- 9 Loading Screens
- 10 Skydive Emotes
- 1 Badge
Of note here:
By the end you will earn enough coins to buy something like next season’s battle pass or an entire character like Wattson or Octane. You will also have enough crafting materials to pick one legendary skin for any gun or character and craft it. You are also guaranteed one loot box that has a legendary in it at rank 50. All of this is a marked improvement over last season.
Elsewhere, in addition to the legendary Caustic skin you see above (which you earn at rank 25), you will also get a legendary Octane skin at rank 75:
The two legendary gun skins are pretty wicked. Here’s the one for the Spitfire:
And the one for the R-301 you unlock at rank 100 has two color variants.
There are a number of frames you unlock as well of varying degrees of quality.
Honestly, for a free game, for a $10 battle pass, if you’re devoted enough to play Apex enough to max out at rank 100, this is probably going to be worth the price of admission. Certainly more than last year when the battle pass was filled with garbage like BP rank badges and endless quips. This stuff is actually somewhat substantive, and the “choose your own reward” aspect of crafting materials and coins is good as well.
I don’t know if this battle pass alone will light Apex on fire again, we’ll see how the new legend, gun and map additions perform. But it’s a step forward, that much is clear. Go and check it out for yourself in-game.
